What Is GEO — and Why Does It Exist Now?
Three years ago, if you wanted a customer to find your business, the answer was straightforward: rank well on Google. Build a great website, earn quality backlinks, optimise your on-page SEO — and when someone typed "best [your service] in [your city]", you showed up. The game was clear.
Then something changed. Not gradually — all at once. In November 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT. In the eighteen months that followed, the way people search for information, businesses, and recommendations underwent its biggest transformation since Google itself launched in 1998.
Today, a growing segment of your potential customers isn't opening Google first. They're opening ChatGPT and typing: "Which digital marketing agency in Noida is best for a manufacturing company?" or "What are the top interior designers in Bangalore with residential project experience?" or "Best CA firm for startup compliance in Mumbai?"
ChatGPT generates an answer. It names businesses. It cites sources. And the person asking reads that answer — before they open a single website, before they scroll through any search results, before they see a single ad you've paid for.
If your business appears in that answer: you've been pre-sold. If it doesn't: you never existed to that customer.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of making your business appear inside those AI-generated answers. It is to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity what SEO is to Google — the systematic practice of building the signals that make AI platforms recommend your brand.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimising your online presence — your content, structured data, E-E-A-T signals, entity consistency, and brand authority — so that AI-powered platforms like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Perplexity cite, recommend, and accurately describe your business when generating answers for users.
The term was coined in academic research in 2023 and has rapidly become the defining new discipline in digital marketing. At Codos Technology, we've been building GEO frameworks for Indian businesses since early 2024 — and the results have convinced us that GEO will be as foundational as SEO within three years.
GEO vs SEO — What's Actually Different
The most common question we get from business owners is: "Can't my existing SEO agency handle this?" The honest answer is: maybe, partially — but only if they specifically understand GEO. Here's why the two disciplines overlap but are not the same.
| Dimension | Traditional SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Target surface | Google blue-link results | AI-generated conversational answers |
| Goal | Rank #1 in a list | Be named in the answer itself |
| Primary signals | Keywords, backlinks, technical SEO, page speed | E-E-A-T, schema, answer-format content, entity consistency, brand citations |
| Content format | Keyword-rich, long-form, structured for crawlers | Question-answering, factual, concise, directly citeable |
| What happens if you win | User clicks your link in a list of 10 | User reads your brand name in the AI's answer — pre-sold before clicking |
| Measurability | Google Search Console, rank trackers | Prompt testing, GSC AI Overviews, Perplexity referral traffic in GA4 |
| Competition in India | High — established since 2000s | Very low — most businesses haven't started |
| Should you run both? | Yes — GEO signals overlap with SEO signals. Running both simultaneously is the highest-ROI approach. | |
The key insight here is the content format shift. Traditional SEO rewards comprehensive, long-form content that covers a topic exhaustively. GEO rewards content that answers a specific question directly and concisely in the first 1–2 paragraphs — because that's what AI models extract and synthesise into their answers.
"The best SEO content covers everything about a topic. The best GEO content answers one question better than anyone else."
— Codos Technology GEO Framework, 2026A business that has done excellent SEO for years already has an advantage in GEO — its domain authority, content depth, and backlink profile all translate. But without the GEO-specific layer (schema markup, answer-format restructuring, entity signals, brand citation building), that SEO work won't automatically produce AI citations.
The AI Platforms That Matter for Indian Businesses
Not all AI platforms are created equal — and different platforms matter differently depending on your business type, target audience, and location. Here's the landscape as it stands for India in mid-2026.
GEO signals overlap heavily across all AI platforms. A strategy built around E-E-A-T, schema markup, answer-format content, and brand citation building improves your visibility on all platforms simultaneously — not just one. You don't need separate strategies per platform. You need one strong GEO foundation.
For most Indian businesses, the priority order is: Gemini (widest reach, lowest competition) → ChatGPT (highest usage, direct consumer intent) → Perplexity (most measurable, highest-intent audience) → Claude (B2B and enterprise focus).
Why Right Now Is the Best Time to Start GEO
We talk to dozens of Indian business owners every month. The most common response we hear about GEO is: "We'll wait until it's more mainstream." This is, with great respect, the wrong instinct — and here's exactly why.
GEO competition in India today — across almost every industry and city — is at near-zero. Most businesses have not started. This is identical to the state of Google SEO in India in 2008–2010. The businesses that invested then held the top positions for years. That same window is open on AI search right now.
Consider what happened with Google SEO. The businesses that optimised early built domain authority, earned links, and established content depth that compounding over years. By the time competitors caught up, they were years behind. Catching up cost 5× more than starting early.
GEO follows the same compounding logic. The signals that make AI platforms trust and cite your brand — E-E-A-T, external citations, entity authority, review volume — accumulate over time. A business that starts building these signals today will be significantly harder to displace in AI results in 2027 than one that starts then.
There is also a specific India-context argument: AI adoption in India is accelerating at a pace above global averages. India added more ChatGPT users in 2025 than any other country outside the US. Gemini is pre-installed on every new Android sold in India. Perplexity is growing fastest among educated, English-fluent, urban professionals — exactly the segment most likely to be searching for the kinds of services B2B companies, professional service firms, and premium consumer brands offer.
The customers who will matter most to your business over the next five years are already using AI to make purchasing decisions. The question is only whether they find your brand when they ask.
How to Start GEO — 6 Steps Any Business Can Take
GEO is not a single tactic — it is a layered system of signals built over time. But there are concrete starting points that any business can implement immediately, and that produce measurable improvements in AI visibility within 60–90 days.
Run a GEO Audit First — Know Where You Stand
Before doing anything, test what AI platforms currently say about your business. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and ask:
- "What is [your business name]?"
- "Best [your service] in [your city]?"
- "Which [your industry] companies in India are most recommended?"
- "Tell me about [your brand name's] services and pricing"
Document every response. Note where you're cited, where you're absent, and — critically — where AI says something inaccurate about you. This baseline is the foundation of your entire GEO strategy.
Restructure Your Content Into Direct-Answer Format
AI models prefer content that answers questions directly and concisely in the first 1–2 paragraphs. Review your most important website pages and restructure them so:
- The page title is a question or clear statement your customers would ask
- The first paragraph gives a direct, clear answer — not a preamble
- Headers are phrased as questions ("What does [your service] include?", "How much does [service] cost in India?")
- Key facts (pricing, location, certifications, results) are stated explicitly and clearly
Think of each page as a response to a specific customer question — because AI models will treat it exactly that way.
Implement Comprehensive Schema Markup
Schema markup is structured data that tells AI platforms (and Google) machine-readable facts about your business. Without it, AI models have to interpret your content — which introduces errors. With it, they can read your facts directly.
- Organization schema — your business name, description, URL, contact, social profiles
- LocalBusiness schema — address, hours, service areas, categories
- Service schema — for each service you offer, with description and pricing
- FAQPage schema — structured Q&A that AI models can extract directly
- Review schema — aggregated ratings from verified review platforms
This is the single highest-leverage technical GEO action available. It directly improves citation accuracy and probability across all AI platforms.
Build E-E-A-T Signals — Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trust
E-E-A-T is Google's framework for evaluating source quality — and it's also what AI platforms use to determine whether your content is worth citing. Building E-E-A-T means:
- Named, credentialed authors on your content — not just "Admin" or "Team"
- Author bio pages with verifiable expertise, qualifications, and experience
- Case studies with real, specific data — not generic testimonials
- Certifications, awards, and memberships displayed prominently with schema markup
- About page that clearly establishes who runs the business, their background, and why they're qualified
E-E-A-T is the most important long-term GEO signal. AI models are specifically designed to prefer citing sources they can verify as authoritative — and E-E-A-T signals are how you prove that authority.
Build Brand Citations in External Sources
AI models don't only read your website — they read everything the web says about you. The more authoritative external sources that accurately describe your brand, the more confidently AI models will cite you. Priority sources to build citations in:
- Industry directories (Clutch, G2, JustDial, IndiaMart — relevant to your sector)
- Review platforms (Google Reviews, G2, Trustpilot, Practo, MagicBricks — industry-specific)
- Press and publications (regional business news, industry publications, PR coverage)
- Wikipedia and Wikidata entity presence (for larger brands)
- LinkedIn company profile fully completed and consistently described
Consistency matters as much as volume. Your business name, services, location, and credentials must be described identically across every source — inconsistencies reduce AI confidence in your brand data.
Create FAQ and Guide Content Targeting AI Query Patterns
People ask AI platforms questions differently from how they type Google searches. AI queries are more conversational, more specific, and more decision-oriented. Create content that targets these patterns:
- "What should I look for when choosing a [service] provider in India?"
- "How much does [service] typically cost in [city]?"
- "What's the difference between [option A] and [option B] for [use case]?"
- "Is [your business name] good for [specific need]?"
- "What are the top [your industry] companies in [your city]?"
Each of these questions should have a dedicated page or FAQ entry on your website — with a direct, factual answer that an AI model can extract and cite. This is GEO content at its most practical.

How to Measure GEO Results
One of the most common objections to GEO investment is: "How do I know if it's working?" The good news is that GEO is measurable — it just requires different tools and metrics than traditional SEO.
Primary GEO Measurement Methods
Prompt testing (monthly). The most direct measurement. Every month, run 50–100 relevant queries across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude — covering category queries ("best [service] in [city]"), comparison queries ("which [service] companies in India?"), and direct brand queries ("tell me about [your brand]"). Track: citation rate (% of queries where you're mentioned), accuracy score (is AI describing you correctly?), and sentiment (positive, neutral, negative).
Google Search Console — AI Overviews data. Google now reports AI Overviews impressions and clicks separately in Search Console. This directly shows how much traffic your site is receiving from Gemini AI Overview citations — with full attribution.
Perplexity referral traffic in GA4. Perplexity always shows source links. If you're cited, users click through. Track traffic source "perplexity.ai" in GA4 — this is the most directly measurable AI SEO traffic available.
Branded search volume growth. When AI platforms mention your brand, users then Google you directly. Rising branded search volume on Google Search Console is a strong downstream indicator that GEO efforts are working — people heard your name from an AI and searched for you.
Direct enquiry attribution. Ask every new enquiry how they found you. An increasing percentage will say "ChatGPT" or "AI" as the channel — especially for B2B and professional services businesses.
A business 4 months into a comprehensive GEO strategy should see: citation rate above 60% in monthly prompt tests, at least some Perplexity referral traffic in GA4, branded Google search volume growing 20–40%, and 3–8 direct enquiries per month explicitly attributing discovery to an AI platform.
